How OEE is calculated

OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) is availability × performance × quality. What Started works it out per machine, and adds machines together for the plant. Open Reports to see it by machine, day and shift.

Planned production time

Everything starts from the time a machine was meant to run:

  • Shift time from the machine's shift schedule. A machine without a schedule is planned around the clock. New machines start on the plant's default schedule (picked when the plant was created, changed in Settings → Shifts).
  • Less breaks set on each shift.
  • Less planned stops: time in a reason marked Planned under Settings → Reasons, such as planned maintenance or not scheduled. A status of off without a reason also counts as planned.

Availability

Run time ÷ planned production time. Every other stop, like a breakdown, waiting for material, changeover or no signal, is lost time. You can see it by reason under Where the time went.

Performance

Ideal time for the parts made ÷ run time. Each part counts at its ideal rate on that machine, or the machine's ideal rate if the part has none. A machine that ran for an hour with an ideal rate of 60 parts an hour and made 45 parts is at 75%.

Set ideal rates on each machine page under Rates. Without them, performance shows as a dash.

Quality

Good parts ÷ parts made. Bad parts come from the machine's reject counter and from parts operators log as bad at the QR sticker.

Good to know

  • Plant and multi-day figures add up times and parts. They are not averages of percentages.
  • Breaks come off all states evenly, so a machine that runs a whole shift is 100% available.
  • A machine is measured from its first status onward. A new machine does not start with days of no signal.
  • The same numbers are available to other systems from the read API at /api/v1/oee.
